Service Description
For Partners and Parents of Dependent and Entitled Adults Do you have a spouse or an adult child with entrenched passivity, delayed dependence, or persistently entitled expectations? Do you find yourself scared of their emotional immaturity or burned out from living with their neediness and blame? Do you feel like your own home has become a den of stagnation? Perhaps you feel stuck in an endless pattern of co-dependency, unable to change the pattern (for many good reasons!) STEADY will teach you how to Stop Tolerating Entitlement, Accommodating Dependence, and Yielding to your partner or your adult child. With the knowledge and tools to remain centered and grounded, prevent the escalation of conflict or violence, and develop that support that you need, you will begin to implement an effective de-accommodation plan. The ultimate goal is to shift your loved one toward the flexible interdependence expected of responsible, emotionally-mature adults. This program reduces dependency and entitlement by educating and supporting behavioral changes of parents and spouses, without direct professional interventions with the dependent/entitled individual. Based on Non Violent Resistance developed by Haim Omer in Israel, and first published in 2006, research on NVR has shown that parents can learn to manage their own behaviors in a way that promotes recovery of entrenched dependence and entitlement in their adult children. This workshop expands upon this research by including spouses in addition to parents. In a series of eight 2-hour classes you will learn the principles of STEADY and put into practice a de-accommodation plan. 1. Identify your loved one’s problem behaviors. 2. Identify how you accommodate the problem behaviors. 3. Learn to prevent conflict escalation and increase trust. 4. Prepare a crisis plan 5. Recruit a support team that includes relatives, friends, and professionals. 6. Prepare and deliver the announcement of your de-accommodation plan. 7. Engage your support team. 8. Gradually stop accommodating.
