Many of us were never taught to treating ourselves with compassion. Instead we learned that we had to set high standards for ourselves and push ourselves to meet these expectations if we ever wanted to achieve our life goals. We developed an inner critic that seemed to keep us going. Actually this inner critic is not always that helpful and it may even lead to a really unhealthy habit of criticizing and blaming self and then others when things don’t go as hoped and planned (which happens a lot in life). Noticing that we our suffering or disappointed or frustrated and NOT criticizing ourselves, but being compassionate instead, may be a giant step toward reducing our suffering. There is only one person available every day, wherever you are, for the rest of your life… available to treat you with compassion, kindness, patience, and love. That person is you. Understanding how to begin to be kind to yourself, and even to your own inner critic, is a powerful antidote to emotional distress and will actually support you to reach your goals even more effectively than that inner critic and be happier along the way. 76 minutes.
